Beneath the large dial that displays the time is a special clock: the astronomical clock. It has four hands and displays the day of the week, the month, and the phase of the moon. One of the hands even indicates whether it is a leap year. On the east side, the coats of arms of the old Swiss Confederation adorn the tower. Over time, the Zytturm has been embellished time and again. After being struck by lightning in 1863, it was given a new spire topped with a golden orb.
However, the tower served not only as a clock and a lookout point. In the “Timpis”—small prison cells—people who had violated city regulations were once held.
Visiting the Zytturm
Booking and Admission:
- Access is granted via the eZug app, which enables entry.
- Without the app, access is available via a badge (registration required).
Badge distribution:
- Tuesday through Saturday: Wunderbox, Fischmarkt 10, 6300 Zug
- Sunday: Intermezzo, Grabenstrasse 6, 6300 Zug | Intermezzo is currently closed for summer break until August 11, 2026.
- Badges cannot be obtained on Mondays.
