The Zug Cherry Tower dates back to an old custom from the 18th century. As soon as the “Chriesigloggä” bells of St. Michael’s Church in Zug rang out, the cherry harvest officially began. Armed with ladders and back baskets, people would rush to the cherry trees to secure the best cherries. Over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the custom gradually fell into obscurity; in 2008, the “Chriesigloggä” was revived, and since 2009, the Chriesisturm has taken place as a spectacular race through Zug’s old town.
The traditional event (date for 2027 not yet known) kicks off with the Zug Chriesigloggä. The ringing of the bells also marks the starting signal for the Zug Chriesisturm—the spectacular race through Zug’s Old Town. The race starts at the Liebfrauen Chapel and winds through the Upper and Lower Old Towns.
Afterward, delicious cherry sausages, fresh cherries, the legendary Etter Kirsch, and other cherry delicacies await you at Landsgemeindeplatz.
In the afternoon, the Zug Cherry Market opens and runs daily thereafter—as long as there are enough cherries.
