In the canton of Zug, various rivers and streams flow through the picturesque landscape. The three best known are the Reuss, the Sihl and the Lorze. Throughout history, the Lorze has played an important role as a source of energy for the industrial development of the region. In the 19th century in particular, numerous factories and manufactories were built along the Lorze, which used the river's water power to generate energy.
One of the best-known factories to emerge along the Lorze was the Zug worsted spinning mill. This was founded in 1869 and was an important employer in the region in the following decades. Other industries, such as the paper and leather industries, also used the river's water power to supply energy.
