On November 15, 1315, a band of Habsburg knights led by Duke Leopold was attacked by people from the area between the present-day villages of Oberägeri and Sattel and forced to retreat. They suffered considerable losses in the process. This historical event went down in history as the mystified "Battle of Morgarten - the Confederates' first battle for freedom". The annual Morgarten shooting at the monument on November 15, the pistol shooting at the Letziturm and the Morgarten celebration at the battle chapel commemorate this important event in the history of the Confederacy.
The monument, which was dedicated in 1908 in a prime panoramic location, is unique in the Swiss monument landscape. Its location and design, size and shape cannot be directly compared with any other memorial in Switzerland.
