High Up - The Most Beautiful Viewpoints in the Region

Naturally, the Wildspitz tops the list of the better-known hills; at 1,580 meters above sea level, it marks the highest point in the canton. This magnificent summit can only be reached by sheer muscle power—but the effort is well worth it.

A leisurely stroll through the Raten area also offers unobstructed views of lakes and mountains. The view extends far into the Alps, and once you’ve had your fill of the mountains, you can let your gaze wander over Lake Zurich from the Gottschalkenberg. It’s not exactly an insider tip, but you can quickly get away from the crowds by taking the path toward Dreiländerstein from Clausenchappeli. Here, you can sit on one of the sunny benches and enjoy the view of the Glarus Alps in complete peace and quiet.

If asked what truly qualifies as a hidden gem, one might answer: Josefsgütsch. It’s located in Neuheim, and as is typical of the Hirzel area, a mighty linden tree stands majestically atop the hill, which is about 720 meters high. The panoramic view from up here is hard to beat. And for those who want to know what can be seen from this prime vantage point, the panoramic sign provides the answers. The Hirzel landscape, with its gentle, green hills, has a special charm. There’s hardly a better place to take in this view than at the cantonal school in Menzingen. A walk around Menzingen, past the Lüthärtigen district, repeatedly offers views of this lovely landscape shaped by the Linth Glacier.

If you’re more in the mood for the city than the countryside, the Guggi, located above Zug’s Postplatz, is the perfect vantage point. No other spot offers such a great view of the historic city of Zug with all its towers and churches. Incidentally, the Guggi is something of an oddity among Zug’s hills. It’s not a whim of nature, but was created during the construction of the Gotthard Railway at the end of the 19th century.

If you’d like to enjoy Zug’s legendary sunsets from a higher vantage point, you’ll find just the spot on the Rägeten field above St. Michael’s Cemetery. On beautiful evenings, the two little benches there are in high demand. If you’d like to enjoy some refreshments while watching the sunset, the Landgasthof Blasenberg, perched high above, is the perfect spot—both for its cuisine and its magnificent view.

A different view of Lake Zug opens up in Walchwil. The Rigi dominates the scenery, which can be admired, for example, along the Walchwil Vita Trail or on the Way of the Cross near the Zentrum Elisabeth, a modern spa hotel. Rarely does anyone stray onto the quiet Way of the Cross, which winds its way up a steep, sparsely wooded slope and offers plenty of places to sit. The Steinhauser Forest—or rather, its edge—also offers wonderful views of the Zug region from north to south, all the way to the Bernese Alps.

In Baar, meanwhile, the Allmend above the Spinnerei site offers views of the lake and mountains, and the new loop-shaped footbridge, with its 265 steps, not only gets your blood pumping but also opens up a whole new perspective on the forested surroundings.

The hamlet of St. Wolfgang near Hünenberg, on the other hand, boasts not only magnificent views but also an illustrious past. The historic complex of buildings in this prime location is well worth a visit in its own right; the view is just an added bonus. Including the Zugerberg and the Gubel in this list of vantage points seems unnecessary given the obviousness of their panoramic qualities. Nevertheless, even the Zugerberg has a hidden gem with spectacular views: on the Lienisberghöhe, completely off the beaten path, you can enjoy an exclusive view of the Rigi and the Central Swiss landscape. Lucky are those who find their way here!
